About Jes Tongio
QUICK BIO
Jesilou (Jes) Tongio is a multidimensional geek who loves to create. She is based in Toronto, Canada. Her pronouns are She / Her.
Jes currently works as a freelance video editor, graphic designer, and writer for BuzzFeed Canada. She is also the author of the Game Over series.
It's easy to make her smile with a cat meme and a large boba milk tea.
WHAT’S UP WITH THE NAME? 🤔
Jes’s given name, Jesilou, is a combination of her grandfather’s name (Jesus) and grandmother’s name (Lourdes).
Jesus Niespla — better known as Jess Niespla — was a prominent Filipino journalist who covered crime and politics in Manila from 1950 until his death in 1984. Jes continues to honour her late grandfather by using a variant of his pen name.
Not sure what to call her? Jes prefers Jes (not Jesilou). She only includes her given name to help search engines aggregate all her work as a former journalist. 😅
SPORTS JOURNALISM CAREER
From 2010 to 2014, Jes fulfilled her childhood dream of being a sports journalist when she worked as a senior writer in the CBCSports.ca newsroom. She wrote, edited and published nightly game recaps, news articles, previews, features, and blogs.
At the same time, she managed news lineups during fast-paced game nights, Hockey Night in Canada live broadcasts, and the 2012 and 2014 Olympic Games.
Additionally, Jes hosted live chats that accompanied the Hockey Night in Canada live-stream, interacting with up to 20,000 fans weekly.
Jes holds a bachelor's degree in journalism from Ryerson University. Her work as a campus sports reporter earned a 2009 Sports Media Canada Award for showing great promise in sports journalism. At age 20, she was the youngest winner and only woman among that year's awardees.
DIGITAL / TV PRODUCTION CAREER
From 2014 to 2019, Jes worked as a senior writer and digital producer with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s Unscripted / Factual Entertainment unit. She oversaw and consulted on digital strategies and content production for primetime television shows such as The Great Canadian Baking Show, The Detectives, Back in Time for Dinner, Hello Goodbye, and more.
Her work with the Canada's Smartest Person digital team won a 2017 Canadian Screen Award for Best Cross-Platform Project (Non-Fiction).
In 2015, Jes initiated a design project that transformed CBC Short Docs thumbnails into promotional keyart with feature film poster treatment. This strategy set a standard for ensuring all titles on the subscription streaming service CBC Gem were accompanied by high quality, visually arresting graphics, and reaching the largest possible audience on YouTube, social media, and across the cbc.ca network via banner ads.
Jes also wrote articles and designed visual assets for multiple programs (including The Nature of Things and Dragons’ Den), such as infographics, Pinterest pins, Instagram Stories, animated GIFs, and social videos that regularly reached over 1 million users. She also concurrently managed social media accounts (including paid campaigns) for several programs, and developed new content formats while testing performance.
Her work on building and maintaining an active online audience on the series Still Standing involved a unique “365 strategy” during the show’s broadcast runs and in the off-season. This year-round approach was achieved by collaborating with the external production company on a steady flow of fresh website and social media content. Jes often collaborated with internal / external stakeholders to achieve digital objectives and exceed expectations.
Jes also took pride in performing quality assurance, providing style references, and establishing best practice guides for incoming / outgoing visual content. She also took on a leadership role, guiding video editors, researchers, freelance writers, and designers through the development of multi-platform content. She enjoyed mentoring, developing, and motivating junior team members with their professional growth in the areas of copy writing / editing, video production, and project management.
In 2019, Jes quit her full-time role at the CBC to move away from strategy and focus solely on her true passion: content. In 2020, she began providing her video editing, graphic design, and writing services to BuzzFeed Canada on a regular basis. Working in a freelance capacity with a flexible schedule has allowed Jes to dedicate more time to her many creative projects.
SIDE HUSTLES
In addition to journalism, Jes previously worked as a freelance web designer from 2010 to 2019. She specialized in building and styling WordPress themes and websites. Her web projects ranged from portfolios, blogs, and online shops.
Currently, Jes is also an indie author. She enjoys writing edgy contemporary fiction. Break the Ice is her first novel, which she had originally written when she was 15.
In her spare time, she live-streams her subpar gaming on Twitch, and runs an Etsy shop. She’s happiest in her cozy, all-white home office, surrounded by her mechanical-keyboard collection, twinkling fairy lights, and the subtle glow of lilac-purple smart LEDs.
